CAIRO, Egypt (AWR) – Members of the Coptic Orthodox Church’s Holy Synod are meeting Thursday to discuss the selection of a new patriarch to succeed Pope Shenouda III, according to a report in Ahram Online.

 

Though the selection process will likely take at least several weeks or months, the Supreme Council of Bishops is expected to begin receiving nominations for papal candidates as soon as this week.

 

Arab West Report Managing Director and columnist Hani Labib, who is intimately familiar with the Coptic Orthodox Church, has profiled several church leaders thought to be leading candidates to become the 118th Pope of the Coptic Orthodox Church of Alexandria.

Egyptians Bid Farewell to Pope Shenouda at Emotional Service In Orthodox Cathedral

 

 

A crowd of thousands of Coptic Christians, Egyptian politicians, and Muslim religious leaders said goodbye to Pope Shenouda on Tuesday during a memorial service at the Coptic Orthodox Cathedral in Cairo. A Look Back at Pope Shenouda III's Record on Ecumenical Relations

 

 

Pope Shenouda, who passed away Saturday, is often praised for his ecumenical stances. However, AWR Chief Editor Cornelis Hulsman says the reality is somewhat different, as the decisions of the Holy Synod show a strong defensive approach to perceived intrusions from Christian denominations with different views from those of the Coptic Orthdox Church.
