CAIRO, Egypt (AWR) – Members of the Coptic Orthodox Church’s Holy Synod are meeting Thursday to discuss the selection of a new patriarch to succeed Pope Shenouda III, according to a report in Ahram Online.
Though the selection process will likely take at least several weeks or months, the Supreme Council of Bishops is expected to begin receiving nominations for papal candidates as soon as this week.
Arab West Report Managing Director and columnist Hani Labib, who is intimately familiar with the Coptic Orthodox Church, has profiled several church leaders thought to be leading candidates to become the 118th Pope of the Coptic Orthodox Church of Alexandria.
